Alvin Ho

If you read Year of the Dog by Grace Lin you will like this book as well! Alvin Ho is the main character and the story is told from his point of view.

What do you do with a kid who doesn't talk in school? Well, if you are that kid and your name is Alvin Ho then there are a number of things you can do. You can prepare for the second grade a PDK (or Personal Disaster Kit) in the event of an emergency. You can ask your older brother how to make friends, only not with that weird girl with the cool eye patch. You can visit a therapist to try to talk out your fears (but only if you talk). But Alvin's got more on his mind than whether or not he's able to say something in class.
Read this book to find out what happens when he takes his dad's favorite toy to school and if he will ever speak in class!

GollyWhopper Games

I just finished reading The GollyWhopper Games. It only took me 2 days because I could not put it down! If you are a fan of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this is the book for you.
Gil Goodson is the main character of the book. His future happiness depends on winning the Golly Toy & Game Company's ultimate competition. If Gil wins, his dad has promised the family can move away from all the gossip, the false friends, and bad press that have plagued the Goodsons ever since The Incident.
Gil's been studying for months. He thinks he knows everything about Golly's history and merchandise. But does he know enough to answer the trivia? Solve the puzzles? Complete the stunts? Will it be more than all the other kids know? He must be quicker and smarter than all of them. The ride of Gil's life is about to begin. Does he win?
Throughout the book you can solve the puzzles right along beside Gil...although I will warn they are tricky. I couldn't figure some of the out. Happy Reading!

What to Do About Alice?

If you are in the mood to read an interesting biography about a girl who grew up in the White House, this is the book for you. Alice Roosevelt was outgoing and independent young lady. She even got into trouble every now and then! Life back then was very different than it is today. The book follows her life from when she was born to until she marries. This is a picture book so you will finish it quickly and probably definitely want to read it again!

Surprises According to Humphrey

Looking at the cover of this book I thought either the cat or the hamster will be the main character. It turns out Humphrey is a class hamster. I thought I wonder what my class hermit crabs must have thought of my class and students!
Humphrey the hamster is the best class pet ever, but don't tell him. He thinks he's a student. His best friends are the kids in Mrs. Brisbane's class...kids like Raise-Your-Hand-Heidi, Wait-for-the-Bell-Garth, and Pay-Attention-Art-Pastel. Unfortunately, they can't understand Humphrey's words that sound like squeaks to them, but they seem to know what he means. Humphrey's best friend is Og, the frog who lives in the tank next door to him.
A lot of things surprise Humphrey. He worries about his friend who cleans his room at night after he starts saying words he can't understand, so he's pretty sure that aliens have taken him and one stayed in his place. Will Humphrey eat the veggies he gives him? Absolutely not!
Most of all, Humphrey and Mrs. Brisbane worry about the students who can't follow the rules. What will they do to help them be happy and successful?

Camp-Write-a-Lotta

Sadly Camp-Write-a-Lotta has come to a close. We spent Friday morning singing the Voice Cadence down the hallway and boy did we love how we were cheered as we walked by! We shared our stories...even though not everyone was able to finish their sharing and then came the awesome slideshow! Ms. Mitchell did an outstanding job putting it together. Thank you for all of your feedback. I will share this with the rest of the fourth grade teachers. We ended our day with hot dogs and s'mores. Yummy. I am so proud of everyone you have truly grown into awesome authors! You will do a wonderful job on Tuesday. Just remember all of those revision strategies as you write that awesome composition. What did you like best about camp?
